Selection

Select the correct weight fabric and size for the job you want done. For stationary coverings the lighter weight tarps are usually adequate (8 oz., 10 oz., 12 oz. canvas, polyethylene, and laminated vinyl). For over-the-road and heavy duty use the heavier weight canvas (14.90 oz.), vinyl coated fabrics (18 oz. and 22 oz.) and neoprene (16 oz.) are recommended.

Maintenance

Clean, dry tarpaulins will last longer. Dirt, grit and chemicals will wear the fabric and affect the treatment. Keep your tarp as clean as possible. On canvas tarps, brush them off or use a dry cloth when cleaning. On coated tarps a damp cloth or light application of water spray can be used. Dry your tarp before storing. A musty odor or mildew on a tarp means dampness. Proper care and maintenance will extend the life of your tarp.

Use

When placing your tarp over the item you are protecting, be sure that you securely tie down your grommets in your corners and along the sides. Let your tarp fit along the natural lay of the material. Tarps tied too loosely or too tightly are subject to damage by wind and abrasion.

A tarp that has been tied too tightly has pulled fabric and/or grommets. Conversely, a loosely tied tarp is often wind whipped, or torn at the hem and/or grommets.

For constant use, rubber tie downs that give flexibility are recommended.

Sharp objects and corners that could possibly damage your tarp should be padded or eliminated. Otherwise, excessive abrasion or punched holes could occur.
